Job DescriptionThe Middlesex Sheriff's Office (MSO) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Paramedic in the Health Service Unit (HSU) within the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA. Under the direction of the Health Services Administrator or designee, the Paramedic will be a member of the HSU's emergency response team for medical emergencies. This employment opportunity is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Additional duties and responsibilities of the Paramedic include, but are not limited, to:

• Conducting efficient patient assessments for medical condition, stabilizing of patients, determining the best course of treatment and preparing patients for transport to the hospital, if necessary;
• Providing medical assistance (first-aid) and administering procedures (CPR or bandaging wounds); administering Intravenous Therapy (IV); assessing vital signs, clearing obstructed airway; reading electrocardiograms (EKG) and X-rays;
• Administering medications, as needed;
• Reassuring patients with compassion and discussing their medical situation with them;
• Interacting with other medical or health care staff by reporting what was observed and administered to patients;
• Documenting medical treatment given to the patient from arriving at the scene to any transfer of care for the patient;
• Replacing, cleaning and monitoring inventory of supplies and equipment;
• Performing other work as required by Management.Working Conditions: Working in a correctional facility; the applicants will be subject to work weekends, nights, holidays and being forced to work over 8 hours depending on operational needs within the Health Services Unit (HSU). The applicants may be required to work on any shift (7:00AM to 3:00PM; 3:00PM to 11:00PM; 11:00PM to 7:00AM). Days off are subject to change based on operational needs. Applicants may be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time and; work alone in an isolated area. The individuals selected must also be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of a law enforcement agency. Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree; Bachelor's Degree is desired;
  • Must have current Paramedic certification through the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS); current Paramedic certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is a plus;
  • Must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and the ability to be re-certified, as needed;
    • Ability to attend all needed continuing education programs as required by attained certifications and the MSO;
    • Excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills in order to work amongst teams and through stressful situations;
    • Strong oral, written, organizational and time management skills with the ability to maintain comprehensive and cohesive records;In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. The applicant must have an active valid driver's license, the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts and pass a criminal background check.Salary: Base salary is $68,745.67 to $70,825.67 plus additional compensation and benefits offered within the collective bargaining agreement.
