The Middlesex Sheriff's Office (MSO) is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Adult Basic Education (ABE) Teacher (Teacher). Working within a correctional setting, the Teacher will provide instruction in adult basic education with concentrations in high school mathematics and English, including reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The Teacher will be working with adult students from diverse socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, including those with significant reading and math deficiencies. This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500) that reports to the Director of Education and positions of higher rank. Additional responsibilities of the Teacher include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing instruction in adult basic education concentrations including: reading, mathematics, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and General Educational Development (GED) preparation;
  • Designing and implementing student lessons that comply with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) / Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS) curriculum frameworks and MSO standards;
  • Administering ABE student assessments, including placement and progress reports; Maintain accurate records and generate timely reports as required; Other work duties as assigned by the Director of Education or their designee. The individual selected for the position of Adult Basic Education Teacher shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules and policies regarding safety and security. Working Conditions: Individual selected must be able to work a flexible schedule between the hours of 7:00AM to 9:00PM and being forced to work over 8 hours depending on operational needs, subject to change based on operational needs and at the discretion of management. The individual selected may encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders while working in a correctional facility and will be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. May be required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, work alone in an isolated area, and be exposed to adverse weather conditions. Individual selected will be required to work on evenings, weekends and holidays and in situations where emergency notification is needed. Qualifications: Ideal candidate will have experience in an adult learning environment and must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Education, English, Math, Special Education or related content area. Master's Degree Preferred; Certified teacher in Massachusetts English Language Arts, Grades 9 - 12; Participate in ABE educational and correctional professional development activities both on and off-site, particularly those sponsored by DESE/ACLS and correctional education-centered organizations; Strong written, communication, organizational and time-management skills and be able to work under pressure on time sensitive projects; Willingness to be a collaborative team-member and assist with all tasks/duties throughout the program; Ability to keep accurate records and generate timely reports; Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access; Must be flexible and able to learn new programs and perform new duties and skills as assigned and required by the Assistant Superintendent of Program Services or designee; Ability to work within a correctional setting, complying with all institutional rules regarding safety and security. Ability to attend any other training as required by the MSO; Must have own transportation In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Salary: Starting annual base salary from $68,745.67 plus additional compensation and benefits provided through a collective bargaining agreement.
